PRESERVING THE HISTORY OF THE DAVIDSON COTTAGE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

The Davidson Legacy Cottage – Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), charity registration number SC052174, was established in December 2022. This charity, dedicated to saving and preserving the Davidson legacy Cottage for generations to come, was born from the tireless efforts of the Davidson Legacy Preservation Group (DPLG). This volunteer-run group was instrumental in raising awareness of the Scottish heritage of the Davidsons from Harley-Davidson®, who lived at the cottage before immigrating to the USA in 1857.
Thanks to the continued efforts of the DPLG volunteers, the unwavering support of the local community, vital funding from the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund, and a significant contribution from the Harley-Davidson® Motor Company, the SCIO successfully secured community ownership of the cottage in March 2025.

About
THE SCOTTISH ROOTS OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON

The scottish roots of the world's most iconic motorcycle

The Davidson family has its roots in the tiny village of Aberlemno near the small market town of Brechin in northeast Scotland. Alexander (Sandy) Davidson was the wright at Netherton Smiddy (blacksmith’s shop), where he lived in the two-bedroom smiddy cottage with his wife, Margaret, their six children and two workers. It was from this picturesque cottage, nestled in the beautiful rolling Scottish countryside that Sandy and Margaret travelled to their new life in Wisconsin, USA. There, one of their sons, William C, met and married another Scot, Margaret McFarlane, from Stirlingshire. Three of their children, Arthur, Walter and William, along with Englishman Bill Harley, became the founders of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company®.
